Four Plus Studio events to see at Melbourne Design Week

Melbourne Design Week returns this May, bringing together architects, designers, makers and thinkers across the city for Australia’s largest design festival. Presented by the NGV, the program spans talks, tours, exhibitions and conversations that dig into how design shapes the way we live, work and move through cities. This year, we’re proud to be part of four events across the program.

Designing Density Well: Delivering Quality Homes for Victorians
Thursday 14 May, 7.45–9.30am | Level 5, 107 Elizabeth Street, MelbourneHousing density isn’t a new conversation, but delivering it well is the real challenge. This panel moves beyond the theory to look at what it actually takes to design, finance and build the ‘missing middle’ housing that Victoria’s planning reforms have made possible. Plus Studio Director Ian Briggs and Associate Nicolas Antoniou joins practitioners and decision-makers to explore how high-quality, diverse density can leave a lasting legacy for Victorian housing. Design Voices: Protecting Design Integrity in a Compromised World
Saturday 16 May, 11am–1pm | Riva Ceramica Tile Shop, 284 Bay Street, BrightonRising costs, shifting briefs, commercial pressure. What does it mean to hold the line on good design when everything around you is pushing back? Presented by Riva Ceramica, this conversation brings together three designers working across different scales to explore where flexibility is possible and where it simply isn’t. Our own Associate Ivona Golubovic joins Jane Merrylees and Roger Borland to reflect on the decisions and lessons that shape how meaningful architecture gets built. Free, booking required.

623 Collins: In Conversation with Fiona Lynch & Plus Studio
Wednesday 20 May, 10am–12pm | Level 5, 83 William Street, MelbourneAn intimate forum held within the 623 Collins display suite. We sit down with Fiona Lynch Office to talk heritage adaptation, contemporary residential design, and what longevity really means in a city like Melbourne. The conversation takes in the design thinking behind one of Melbourne’s western edge projects, with space for the discussion to continue over champagne. Presented by Sterling Global. From Amenity to Experience: Hospitality and the Evolving Workplace
Wednesday 20 May, 5.30–7pm | Invicta House, 226 Flinders Lane, MelbourneWhen daily attendance becomes a matter of choice, buildings have to earn their place in people’s routines. This panel explores how hospitality thinking is changing what we expect from workplaces and city centres. Hosted at Invicta House on Flinders Lane, a heritage building where Ian Briggs served as director and lead architect, the conversation brings together leaders from property, hospitality and design to explore how ground floors can become genuine destinations.
